Old Girl Makes Her Name in the Sport of Kings

Monica Barrera (Class of 2005) is making her name in the Sport of Kings – Horseracing. Early this year Monica was appointed Racing Manager of Gooree stud at Mudgee, owned by her grandfather Eduardo Cojuangco affectionately known as “the boss”. Gooree is one of Australia’s most successful and best known breeding and racing operations.

The red and black striped colours of Gooree, some of the most familiar on Australian racetracks, were carried to victory recently at Eagle Farm in Brisbane when exciting colt Your Song had an impressive win in the Group 1 BRC BTC Cup which incidentally was won by Black Caviar in 2011.

Monica is no stranger to the racing industry having worked her way from the ground up, doing track work for Gai Waterhouse and Bart Cummings. She also has her own racing interests and a horse Bound to Blush sports her silks, which are purple with black stripes. She is overseeing the downsizing of the Gooree team with focus now on quality over quantity but there are still over 100 horses on the books.
